Rogaine - Regain Your Hair Strands
By Tim Bock

Wondering where those days when you have a head full of hair have gone to? Or simply where your hair has gone to? Hair loss in men is not uncommon. A lot of men struggle with this nightmare, not knowing what to do, how to deal with the loss, and what are the options. Some go through a period of denial and wishful thinking that it is temporary and it will grow back soon. Such hope without doing anything to remedy the situation will not yield favorable results. Others have gone on a search for toupees and hairpieces as the loss spreads uncontrollably. And others, thinking the situation through, and to astonishing results, have ordered Rogaine.

Rogaine is a specially formulated hair regrowth solution. If you find that a patch of hair is thinning, do not waste another second and order Rogaine immediately. It is effective even with genetic hair loss. Rogaine causes your hair to grow back if you are bald, and to grow thicker if your hair is thinning. Rogaine is made especially for men, and it is strictly unadvisable for women, and to kids eighteen years old and below.

To see Rogaine’s effect, all men have to do is use it twice daily (using it more often does not change anything, but use it less then you might find the hair that has found its way back to your scalp fall off). So at the first sign of hair loss, order Rogaine, and you won’t have to go further the balding process.

Using Propecia to Treat Hair Loss
By Arturo Ronzon

For men who are experiencing hair loss, one of the more popular treatments worth considering is called Finasteride. This anti-androgen is marketed as Proscar, Propecia, Fincar, Finpecia, Finax, Finast, Finara and Prosteride. For the purpose of this article, we will use the term Propecia to describe the various forms of Finasteride, as Propecia is by far the most asked about, and most widely used version of the anti-androgen.

Propecia is an anti-androgen which works by inhibiting what is called 5-alpha reductase. 5-alpha reductase is an enzyme which converts testosterone into something called dihydrotesterone. It was initially approved in 1992, but was called Proscar at the time, and was a treatment mainly used for prostate enlargement. However, a study on 1mg of Finasteride had demonstrated hair re0growth in male pattern hair loss, which prompted the FDA to approve Finasteride in 1997 as a male pattern hair loss treatment.

Propecia is a drug trade name which is the product of Merck & Co. In Propecia, only 1 milligram of Finasteride can actually be found. The patent on Propecia owned by Merck had expired on June 19 of 2006, allowing the FDA to approve a generic formulation for Finasteride which is available in 5 milligram tablets.

Finasteride is generally not indicated by use for women, and Propecia does not have any affect at all on hair loss in women. Additionally, the Finasteride in Propecia has been known to cause birth defects in unborn babies, and has therefore been placed in the FDA’s Pregnancy Category X. As long as the tablets are not swallowed, they should not be harmful to pregnant women and their unborn babies, but women should avoid the pills whenever possible, especially when crushed or broken. Many professional sports have had to ban Finasteride as it can be used to mask the abuse of steroids.

Propecia shows a 29 to 68 percent success rate, but the treatment is only effective for as long as the treatment is continued. As soon as therapy is ceased, the hair that is gained or maintained will be lost within a period of six to twelve months. Though Propecia has appeared to work more successfully in the crown area, it also works well along the hairline.

Extraction Of Essential Oils For Aromatherapy
By Zena Morris

The very essence of Aromatherapy is its essential oils. Extracted from a number of aromatic plants, these oils are highly volatile, as well as concentrated. Being highly volatile, these essential oils evaporate fast, leaving no residue, or oily feel, behind. Parts of the aromatic plants, such as flowers, leaves, and stems, in addition to their barks, fruits, and also their roots are used to extract the essential oils. Though the oils are extracted from the aromatic plants by various methods, the most popular and common process is by distillation.

The Process Of Distillation

There are a number of distillation processes through which essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants. The Steam distillation and the Water distillation are two of the methods among many others. Of these two, the Steam process is more popular. Many are of the view that this is the only way to extract essential oils for aromatherapy.

The Steam distillation process requires close monitoring to ensure that the steam is maintained at a temperature that will not cause the plants to be damaged. For the purpose, a still is used which has a vessel for heating, and another one for cooling. After placing the aromatic plant in the heating vessel of the still, steam is introduced into it. The steam helps release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant. These aromatic molecules, along with the steam, rise into the cooling device, which is cooled by cold water.

The aromatic vapors condense into liquid on cooling. This mixture of oil and water (oil from condensed aromatic vapors, and water from condensed steam) is collected in another vessel. As is the nature of oil and water they are automatically separated – oil at the top and water at the bottom. The oil from the top is simply siphoned off. This oil is highly concentrated, and is used in aromatherapy in this form.

For the water distillation process too, a still is used. In this instance, the aromatic plant is placed in it and sunken in water. The water is boiled, which helps release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant – as in the case of stream distillation. The aromatic vapors are cooled and then easily separated from water. This method of extraction of the is appropriate for plants that cannot withstand high temperatures and pressures.

One method of distillation is the combination of steam and water. In this process, the aromatic plant is placed in a still and submerged under water. Steam is then introduced to help release the aromatic molecules and oils of the plant. On cooling, the essential oils are collected as explained above.

The aromatic oils extracted by the above methods produce essential oils in their concentrated forms. In case of topical aromatherapy, these oils are never applied to the skin in their concentrated forms. They are diluted with the help of carriers, such as alcohol, lotions, vinegar, or water.

It is essential that the essential oils be stored with care. Properly airtight dark bottles, need be used, and should be away from exposure to high heat and temperatures.

Oil and Water - Do You Know The Difference?
By Shaun Parker

Do you know the difference between an essential oil and floral water? I had no idea either; I did not know that there is a huge difference in the two. It is true that both start life in the same fashion, being steamed in huge containers (commonly known as a steam distillation plant), but I had no idea that the process actually separates the plants oils into condenser thus leaving the steam which is the floral water. This perhaps is a rather simplistic overview and obviously the process is far more in depth.

Floral Waters otherwise known as Hydrosols, Hydrolats, Hydroflorates or distillates contain essential oils. This occurs when the distillation process takes place. The specific plant matter is placed into the Distiller which also contains a measured quantity of water. Once the plant (distillery) starts to heat, steam is produced which warms the plants encouraging them to release oils and aromas. These oils are collected in a condenser but during this process, tiny particles of the oils are trapped in the steam and this essentially is your Floral Water or Hydrosol.

Hydrosols are far less concentrated than essential oils only containing 0.2 percent essential oil they are of a lighter fragrance, having been diluted in the steaming process. Floral waters therefore are far less harsh and irritant than essential oils and make perfect astringents for skin; you will find there are many products which are used for this purpose such as skin cleansers and toners or refreshing facial mists. Floral waters can be applied direct to the skin whereas many essential oils are too concentrated for this purpose and have to be mixed a vegetable carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, sunflower or olive oil before applying. These are sometimes referred to as base massage oils.

Producing Hydrosols and plant oils is now becoming a sideline for many farmers within the UK, setting aside land to produce aromatic herbs such as Lavender, Sage, Chamomile or Rosemary for example. The farmer grows these crops and when ready, harvests them, shipping them to the appropriate distillery, once the process of steam distillation has taken place samples are then tested in an independent laboratory, these tests include aroma evaluation and gas chromatography. This in turns ensures the highest quality essential oils.

From this point the uses are endless, especially in the health and beauty industry. You can find essential oils in aromatherapy products, hair care products, skin creams and lotions, bath and shower products, soaps and of course massage oils as mentioned before. Other products include oils for oil burners or vapourisers, Inhalators which can be sprinkled on handkerchiefs, fragranced room and linen sprays, candles with essence of oils, as well as gums and resins for air fresheners, they are so versatile they can even be taken as a tonic or used as a douche!

So with all these healing and skin nourishing qualities are they safe to use? It has been noted that essential oils should not be used during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Contraindications observe that essential oils may be harmful to the foetus or even contribute to miscarriage. Essential oils should also not be used on infants under 8 weeks as the liver is not mature enough in those first few weeks of life to filter the oil. Essential Oil should never be applied directly to the skin as it can be an irritant and cause an allergic reaction. But it is safe to say that consultation with a trained aromatherapist or strict compliance with the manufacturers guidelines will make the use of essential oils and flower waters an extremely pleasant and in many cases relaxing experience.

So with all this knowledge from seed to bottle it is possible to track the process of the initial aromatic herb through to the final form whatever that maybe, with such a wide range of essential oils and floral waters to choose from such as Rosemary, Geranium, Chamomile, Hyssop, Frankincense, Hemp, Lavender, Dill even Lemon we haven't even scratched the surface.
